Dutch Parliament
In Search of a New Concept for the Dutch Parliament Building
Project Stage: Graduation Project
Program: Parliament
Location: Schiphol, Netherlands
Design Period: 2017-18
The project proposes a new solution for the House of Representatives of the Netherlands, emphasizing openness and accessibility in democratic processes.
Schiphol Airport was chosen as the location for the new building due to its high level of security and unique position between local and global zones. The local (landside) zone is open to Dutch residents and includes public spaces for meetings and discussions with representatives. The global (airside) zone is accessible to international travelers, allowing them to engage in democratic processes through designated open spaces.
The project speculates on the concept of security, highlighting the relationship between politics and safety. The choice of Schiphol takes advantage of the existing strict security system, making the parliament more accessible without compromising safety. This approach also underscores how security and politics can work together to create an open democratic space.
The building acts as a symbol of progressive democracy, where physical boundaries are not obstacles but means of fostering a more open dialogue between citizens and politicians. It embodies the idea that security and accessibility can coexist, creating a more inclusive and safe environment for democratic processes.
